After the disappointment of the previous instalment, we needed something new in this series. To be honest I don’t think we needed another Paranormal Activity film but here we are. They took the smart decision to have a new family. As it’s a new family there aren’t any restrictions really. There is a newish story that does tie in to what we have seen in the other films. The first thing that stands out is that with the exception of Hector, none of the characters are your typical level of annoying. They are all perfectly fine characters but Jesse is the best one which is what you would expect from the lead. He starts off fine and then as the film progresses is taken over by the demonic force and events take the predictably bad route.
Whilst it has an interesting story and some good performances, it doesn’t do anything original. There are still the jump scares and things that you are supposed to see in the corner of the screen but it all mixes in quite well here and after the fourth one I was just happy that there was some energy in this film. It felt like it wanted to do something different and it was working.
As it’s the fifth film in the series, there are links to other films. We have Ali from the second one to deliver some exposition and then disappear again. Then there is the link to the third one where they arrive at the house that the Grandma owned and then out of nowhere we end up at Katie and Micah house from the first one where we get to see what happened when Katie went downstairs. I thought that was one of the best scenes in the film. I know it may not have been totally necessary but I liked it and thought it worked quite well.
I really like this film. I think its probably the best one since the first film. I think compared to the fourth one, this one looks like Citizen Kane. There is just one film left in the series at time of writing so hopefully this will remain the second best film in the series.
